Lithuania’s security situation has not changed following a visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, President Gitanas Nausėda said Monday, adding that he hoped the talks would help reduce tensions in the region.
US media reported last week that Ratcliffe travelled to Moscow for meetings with Russian officials. The Wall Street Journal and CBS News reported that his goal was to persuade Russia not to attack NATO members, citing US intelligence assessments that Moscow could seek to test the alliance. The CIA declined to comment on the trip.
Nausėda told reporters Monday that Lithuania had no reason to be concerned about the visit.
“Our allies are informing all of us about the content of the conversation, and we were also informed that the meeting in Moscow would take place,” Nausėda said. He added that Lithuania was respecting Washington’s decision not to publicly disclose details of the meeting.
“At this moment, I can say that the meeting addressed the goals that had been set. The meeting was aimed at reducing tensions in the region. I very much hope that this message reached the Kremlin regime at the right time,” he said.
