The chairman of Lithuania’s parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee said Thursday that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s visit to Moscow was useful for Lithuania but did not indicate an increased threat to the Baltic country.
“I think this visit is, I won’t hide the word, useful to Lithuania in a certain sense,” Remigijus Motuzas told reporters. He cited recent warnings about possible attacks on critical infrastructure as a reason for Lithuania to pay closer attention to potential threats.
“I don’t think the danger to Lithuania has increased, but the visit is another signal that we need to be concerned about our critical infrastructure and devote even more attention to it,” Motuzas said. “I think there is no direct military threat in the near future.”
The Wall Street Journal and CBS News reported that Ratcliffe sought during his Moscow visit to deter Russia from attacking NATO members, citing US intelligence assessments that Moscow could seek to test the alliance.
Officials and intelligence agencies have previously warned that Russia could consider attacks on critical infrastructure in NATO’s eastern-flank countries using drones from Ukraine.
