Bulgaria will adopt a road safety reform plan that will bring road information and control functions under a single national structure, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said at the beginning of Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting.
Radev said improving road safety requires more than prevention and coordination between institutions. It also requires reliable, comprehensive information available in real time, as well as a single body responsible for managing that information and a unified control structure. At present, these functions are divided among several institutions.
“Guaranteeing road safety requires not only prevention, not only good coordination between institutions, but reliable, comprehensive information, real-time information, requires a single body for managing this information and a single control body,” Radev said.
Under the plan, existing bodies will be brought together into a new national structure, the Executive Agency “Automobile Transport Operator,” with a single national center. The center will collect and manage road safety information, including data from the toll system.
The system will incorporate information from as many traffic sources as possible, including municipal cameras, police body cameras and other available sensors. Information on secondary roads will also be included. The data will be monitored around the clock in real time.
