After a long wait, on September 8, we now have the results of the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) which measures the skills of 15-year-old students.
There’s good news all around. Philippine scores have improved in all three subjects tested: our reading score rose from 347 in 2022 to 367, math from 355 to 371, and science from 356 to 373.
All three increases were statistically significant, meaning the analysis finds evidence of improvement beyond sampling and measurement uncertainty. PISA noted that we were among eight participating education systems that exhibited significant gains in all three subjects. Great!
In addition, the share of Filipino students below baseline proficiency in science, or PISA’s minimum expected skill level, also fell by a significant 8.9-percentage points between 2022 and 2025.
All of this is welcome news, and our teachers and students deserve recognition.
