Federico Valverde didn’t just score against Manchester City on March 11. He buried them three times before halftime, delivering a first-half hat-trick that sent the Santiago Bernabéu into delirium and gave Real Madrid a 3-0 victory in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg.
The Uruguayan midfielder found the net at the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minute marks, turning what was expected to be a tightly contested affair into a one-sided masterclass.
A captain’s performance
Valverde’s opening goal carried an unusual assist credit. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois initiated the play that led to the first strike. The second goal pushed the scoreline to 2-0, and by the time Valverde completed his hat-trick three minutes before the break, City’s players looked like they were already thinking about the bus ride home.
Valverde has served as captain for the 2025-26 season following the departure of several veteran players, including Luka Modrić and Lucas Vázquez, from the squad.
