Most landfills across Greece are full or near capacity, prompting the Ministry of Environment to offer €20 million in public funding for new or expanded landfill infrastructure.
With landfills remaining the nation’s primary waste solution and the EU denying funds for them, Environment Minister Stavros Papastavrou stated that funding is required to expand capacity “to avoid saturation of existing sites” and protect public health until integrated waste projects operate.
The call invites the country’s 14 waste management bodies to submit proposals. However, the ministry will only fund entity-owned land acquisitions and construction for bodies with completed studies.
Eligible entities must be certified and align with regional plans. Private concessionaires must prove subsidies avoid illegal state aid. Currently, 95 landfills operate across Greece’s 13 regions.
