Attica’s waste data show a mixed picture as some municipalities cut landfill disposal while others generated more garbage.
Athens sent 333,959 tons to landfill in 2025, a slight decline from 2024 but a 9.8% increase from 2020. Officials attributed the rise largely to tourism, saying the commercial triangle alone produces waste comparable to a medium-sized municipality. Across Attica, 1.86 million tons were buried at Fyli in 2025, versus 1.82 million in 2020.
Aspropyrgos recorded one of the steepest increases, which local officials linked to economic growth. Several municipalities reduced waste, including Saronikos and Halandri.
Municipal leaders also criticized regional charging rules, saying fees still reflect 2020 volumes and penalize municipalities that invested in reductions.
Recycling rates remained low, with Vrilissia leading at 19%. Metamorfosi reached 18%, Nea Smyrni 17.9%, Glyfada 17.6%, Maroussi 17.5%, while many municipalities stayed below 10%.
