Thessaloniki is “on the cusp of a major leap,” in tourism, having resolved infrastructure issues that have been pending for almost 30 years, an international conference organized by Kathimerini has heard.
Kathimerini’s fourth installment of its “Reimagine Tourism in Greece” event, held at the city’s Concert Hall, focused on “Thessaloniki as a New European Metropolitan Destination.” The event discussed what is required to strengthen the city’s strategic position as an emerging metropolitan destination, with discussions covering key topics such as infrastructure, connectivity, culture, gastronomy and attracting specific markets.
“The city is changing through its infrastructure…Infrastructure is being delivered – roads, hospitals, the metro, and public space is being upgraded,” said Stelios Angeloudis, mayor of Thessaloniki, at a panel moderated by Kathimerini’s Executive editor, Alexis Papachelas.
“I hope their completion, whether major infrastructure projects or the major regeneration we are preparing, will turn Thessaloniki into a European city which will help improve the city’s confidence….I see Thessaloniki as the center of Northern Greece, that is turned towards the Balkans and further north,” he added.
