The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster has drawn a line in the sand: full quantum resistance on Ethereum’s base layer by December 2029. The target covers the execution, consensus, and data layers, essentially every critical piece of infrastructure that keeps the network running.
The deadline isn’t arbitrary. It’s pegged to what the cryptography community calls “Q-day,” the theoretical moment when quantum computers become powerful enough to break the public-key cryptography that secures virtually every blockchain. Current estimates from major tech firms place that risk as early as 2030, which means Ethereum is giving itself roughly a three-year runway to rebuild its cryptographic foundations before the clock runs out.
The roadmap to quantum-proof Ethereum
Getting there requires a specific sequence of upgrades, starting with the Hegotá hard fork targeted for late Q4 2026. Think of Hegotá as the on-ramp: it needs to ship on time for everything that follows to stay on schedule.
After Hegotá, five additional hard forks must land to reach what the Foundation calls “L*,” or full quantum readiness. At the planned pace of roughly 7.2 months per fork, the math works out to late 2029. Miss a beat, and the timeline starts slipping.
