PHILADELPHIA — Jesús Luzardo is too good to pitch as a reliever during the postseason. That was the case even before he threw a masterful 109-pitch shutout Monday against the Atlanta Braves. No sensible postseason pitching plan for the Phillies would restrict Luzardo to the bullpen just because they lack trust in most of the current relievers.But there is a distinction between Luzardo sitting in the bullpen for Game 1 of a best-of-three Wild Card Series and him not starting at all. The Phillies (81-63) are not guaranteed a spot in the postseason, but they are in prime position. At some point, they can debate the details. There is a robust case for any of the team’s top starters — Luzardo, Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez — to start Game 1.And there might be strategic reasons to hold Luzardo back for a potential Game 3. Of those three frontline starters, Luzardo is best equipped to pitch as a reliever. He did it last October when he entered Game 4 of the National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium in extra innings.If Luzardo were to sit in the bullpen for Game 1 and pitch on what would normally be his day for a side bullpen session, he could still start a potential Game 3. It’s asking a lot, but a three-game series calls for extreme tactics. In an ideal world, the Phillies could craft a plan in which their Game 1 starter records 17 or 18 outs with Luzardo and Jhoan Duran being asked to secure the final nine or 10 outs.That’s one way to build a bridge to Duran.
