SEATTLE — After the 104th pitch left his hand, Jesus Luzardo retreated to the T-Mobile Park visitors dugout with his teammates. He stayed on the top step of the far end until the entire defense came off the field, laughing and exchanging high-fives.Luzardo, the Philadelphia Phillies’ most consistent pitcher by far this summer, had delivered again. He did not give up a hit until the fifth inning Wednesday. He struck out nine. His sweeper was as sharp as ever. And he eclipsed 200 strikeouts during the start, now sitting at 203 for the season.“I like the strikeouts for sure,” Luzardo said. “But, at the end of the day, I think the win is nice.”The Phillies got the win 6-0 against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday — their 19th in Luzardo’s 26 starts this season, and 12th in his 14 starts since the start of June. Luzardo’s ascendance after a rocky April has meant so much to these Phillies.Everyone in the rotation has struggled at various times. But Luzardo has emerged as the most consistent thing the Phillies have at this juncture — quite the development given Cristopher Sanchez’s and Zack Wheeler’s dominant first halves. It is hard to picture where this team would be without his strong summer.After the Phillies rode his excellence and multi-run homers from Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper to the win Wednesday, music blared throughout the visitors clubhouse at T-Mobile Park. Players arranged bags and suitcases. There was a flight to catch to California, where the Phillies will begin a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.Before then, here are some things I think after the Phillies lost their nine-game winning streak in Seattle.I think the Phillies’ defense looks better than it has all year — a sentiment that seems to be the prevailing opinion among the team and fanbase. But it feels like a remarkable statement just three weeks after the Phillies dramatically shook up everything to bring Luis Arraez aboard.So much went right Wednesday. Bryce Harper leaped and made an inning-ending catch at the warning track in the first inning. Arraez made a spinning, back-handed catch to save a hit in the sixth. Bryson Stott continued to play a strong third base.“Everybody in the infield made a nice play,” interim manager Don Mattingly said after the game.
