The Electoral Court struck off an application by the United Democratic Front Party to be allowed by the Independent Electoral Commission to submit nominations for councillor candidates for about 110 wards in the City of Cape Town.
The Electoral Court has dismissed an application by the United Democratic Front Party asking the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to extend the deadline for the submission of its councillor candidate lists.
The judgment delivered on Friday, comes as the ANC is considering court action after it could not submit candidate lists in several municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Free State by the August 28 deadline.
The United Democratic Front Party initially launched an urgent application asking for an order granting it leave to submit its ward candidate nominations after the deadline.
However, when the matter was heard on August 28, the party had narrowed down its relief asking only for leave to nominate ward candidates in some or all the wards it intended to contest with the intention to substitute those nominations with other candidates.
