If you or your little sibling were in the portable classroom during middle school, there's a good chance that the roof of that classroom spent its days doing nothing for anyone except soaking up sunlight, sunshine collected for free and put to no good use. The "practical" appearance of that gray asphalt shingle roof could have been found in many classrooms nationwide. Still, a 1999 Florida Solar Energy Center study titled “Evaluation of Energy Efficiency Improvements to Portable Classrooms in Florida,” at Silver Sands Middle School in Port Orange, found that the roof was silently raising the cooling costs and making the room less conducive to learning. The solution was pretty simple. Scientists replaced the gray roofing shingles on two mobile classrooms with white metal roofing panels and monitored the results for two years.The classroom nobody wanted to sit in and the solutionPortable classrooms are a common fixture in U.S. public schools looking to solve overcrowding, and Florida alone had 25,000 portable classrooms burning energy that could have been used elsewhere for education-related matters. According to the same Florida Solar Energy Center study, the two portables under observation, named 035 and 096, were identical wooden boxes having a dark shingled roof, which made the wooden attic hot above the children's heads.An asphalt shingle roof. Image credits: WikipediaHere, the solution wasn't insulation or new windows, or an elaborate HVAC retrofit, but simply the roofing material. The old gray asphalt shingles were torn off, and a reflective white metal roof was installed. The study found that once the reflective roof was installed, the attic-like plenum space above the ceiling's temperature dropped by over 25°F. Less heat reaching the ceiling meant the air conditioner had to work less to keep the room comfortable.The staggering numbers Use of energy for cooling purposes in Portable 096 was reduced by more than 33% following the replacement of the roof, without any other alteration in the classroom. That's roughly a third less energy spent fighting heat that, in principle, a coat of reflective white paint or coating, the low-cost cousin of a full metal roof replacement, can also help prevent, even if Silver Sands itself achieved its results with a proper metal roof, not paint. Image credits: WikipediaAccording to 1998 report titled “Demonstration of Energy Savings of Cool Roofs,” from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the use of white reflective roofs reduced daily usage of air conditioning in various buildings in California and Florida during summer season by between 2 and 63 percent based on the insulation of the buildings, and the weather, which may be a huge variation, but definitely an actual reduction in energy usage and never an increase. It's not a "little-known secret" either. As per EPA guidance on cool roofing, reflective roofs may be 50 to 60 degrees cooler than regular dark roofs during summer days, and that’s why the EPA recommends their use.The catch you may have missed However, reflective roofs are not a panacea, to put it mildly. The Berkeley Lab data also indicates that savings decrease in colder climates that don't receive as much sunshine, and that a very reflective roof can actually cause a slight rise in heating costs in winter. This is a compromise that should be calculated for each building in America, not for all of them. Yet, for schools where the roofs are baked under the hot, humid summer sun, and the aging portables are on the verge of collapse while budgets are being stretched as thin, this now nearly 27-year-old experiment in Florida is a little-known reminder that sometimes the smartest infrastructure is also the least dramatic, just above your head, waiting to be noticed.
