The eight accused facing charges in connection with the alleged R9.9 million Emfuleni electricity syndicate will have to wait another week to learn whether they will be released on bail.

The Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court heard arguments on bail yesterday, with State prosecutor Titus Daniso urging the court to keep the accused in custody while investigations are finalised.

Daniso told the court that the seriousness of the allegations, particularly those involving essential infrastructure, weighed against releasing the accused.

He also warned that their freedom could compromise the investigation or give them an opportunity to evade authorities.

“We can’t rule out that the accused will commit a Schedule 1 offence,” Daniso said.
