The Nampally court rejected the police plea for the remand of BRS MLCs Tata Madhu and Naveen Kumar Reddy in connection with alleged derogatory remarks against Speaker Gaddam Prasad.The police arrested them on Tuesday after registering a case against the two MLCs, and produced them before the court. After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court refused to grant judicial custody and asked the police to release them after obtaining two surities of ₹10,000 each.The court also adjourned the hearing to September 17, and directed both the MLCs to appear in person.The two MLCs were booked under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act following complaints over the remarks against the Speaker, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community.Mr. Madhu was arrested from the MLA quarters, while Mr. Naveen Kumar Reddy was taken into custody from his residence at Kokapet on Tuesday morning. Both were subsequently shifted to a police station for further investigationAfter their release, both the MLCs went to the Assembly to meet other BRS MLAs and MLCs including party working president K.T. Rama Rao. However, the MLCs were not allowed to speak to the newspersons at the media point as they were already suspended from the Council for the remainder of the sessions. The Assembly Marshals forcibly took them out of the media point even as other BRS MLCs tried to stop them. However, other BRS MLCs were allowed to speak.Their arrests come a day after the Assembly witnessed intense protests over the behaviour of the BRS MLCs. Mr. Madhu allegedly made the derogatory remarks during a scuffle with the police when the BRS MLAs and the MLCs were prevented from entering the Assembly for wearing black T-shirts with ‘objectionable’ content against the government.The developments also triggered a political confrontation between the Congress and BRS, with the Opposition alleging that the government was targeting its leaders, while the ruling party insisted that the law would take its course.The police are questioning the two MLCs as part of the investigation and are examining the statements and other material related to the alleged remarks Published - September 08, 2026 08:31 am IST
