The Hindu BureauChief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s reply in the Assembly on Monday failed to address people’s concerns over the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu and instead focused largely on attacking the DMK, according to Puthiya Tamilagam founder K. Krishnasamy.Mr. Krishnasamy told reporters people had expected the Chief Minister to explain the measures being taken to prevent crimes against children, women and senior citizens as the government completed nearly four months in office. On corruption, Mr. Krishnasamy said it should not be treated as an issue concerning the DMK alone. Corruption cases had also involved governments headed by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. “The Chief Minister should be neutral irrespective of the political party involved. His focus should not be only on the DMK,” he said. The PT leader questioned whether Mr. Vijay was being impartial in dealing with corruption allegations. Referring to the induction of former AIADMK Ministers C. Vijayabaskar and M.R. Vijayabhaskar, who face corruption-related cases, into the ruling TVK, he asked whether it was fair to accommodate them while claiming to act against corruption. He questioned how the Congress, VCK and Left parties could support the Vijay government while the Chief Minister was attacking the DMK and its leader M.K. Stalin, whom these parties had supported during the Assembly election. “Mr. Vijay should have the courage to leave these parties and face the elections on his own,” he said. With the DMK no longer in power, there was no point in repeatedly going back to issues concerning the previous regime, he said.“Mr Vijay’s speech may be good for live (telecast), but not for life,” Mr. Krishnasamy said.He also said the Opposition had the right to present its views in the Assembly and it was not appropriate to attack the Opposition without giving it an adequate opportunity to respond.Instead of repeatedly speaking against and attacking former DMK Ministers, the government should initiate action against them if there were concrete evidence of wrongdoings, he said.
