Onion prices have stabilised at ₹50-₹55 per kg at the Koyambedu wholesale market over the past few days. Traders, however, said prices were likely to remain the same for at least another month and were not expected to see any significant drops.The cost of the onions, one of the kitchen staples, climbed up to ₹60 per kg last week. However, the prices remain steady at ₹50-₹55 per kg now. However, onions are being sold for up to ₹70 per kg in the retail market.On average, the market receives only half the load of the usual 100 loads of onions daily from various parts of the country, including Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka. P. Sukumar, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetables, Fruits, and Flowers Merchants’ Association, said the market had been receiving five additional truckloads from neighbouring States, which have kept the onion prices from peaking further. Fewer arrivals from Nashik and poor quality produce had pushed up prices.The cost of most other vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, and potatoes, remain under check owing to good yields in the neighbouring States. Vegetables such as beans (₹50-₹70 per kg) and green peas (₹100 per kg) are among the costlier ones. Produce from Tamil Nadu accounts for 20% of the total arrivals, Mr. Chandran said.Wholesale traders said the prevailing trend was likely to continue for the next few weeks, barring any major changes in arrivals or weather conditions.
