The price of big onion has doubled at the wholesale markets in Coimbatore in the last 10 days.According to M. Rajendran, president of the Thyagi Kumaran Market Vegetable Traders’ Association, the wholesale price of big onion was ₹15 a kg 10 days ago. Now, the best quality is priced at ₹32 a kg.The onions come to Coimbatore markets from Maharashtra. The arrivals from Karnataka will start only in August. Till then prices are expected to remain at this level or increase. Currently, big onions are sold at ₹25, ₹28 or ₹32 a kg at the wholesale markets, depending on the quality. There is no shortage in availability of the onions. The main reason for the increase is this is a season for exports. However, if the monsoon is delayed and Karnataka arrivals are impacted, the domestic prices may shoot up.In the case of small onion, which is growing primarily in Tamil Nadu and is sold across the State, Kerala and neighbouring countries that have significant Tamil population, the wholesale price is ₹60 a kg. It has remained at this level for almost a week, he added.Among other vegetables, the cost of beans is the highest, Mr. Rajendran said. Published - June 30, 2026 07:12 pm IST
