An accused in a murder case was shot in the leg by the police in the early hours of Monday, after he allegedly assaulted a policeman and attempted to escape from custody.Umesh, the prime accused in the murder of one Kiran — a case reported on Sunday — sustained a bullet injury to his left leg and is undergoing treatment at McGann Hospital here. Tunga Nagara police station Inspector K.T. Gururaj fired at him after multiple warnings and a round of warning fire in the air, the police said.Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil told the media that Umesh had been taken into police custody in connection with the murder. He allegedly assaulted a police constable, Thammanna, and attempted to escape when he was taken to the restroom. The police fired a warning round in the air, and after further warnings, the Inspector shot him in the left leg, Mr. Nikhil said.“The accused has been shifted to McGann Hospital for treatment. He is the prime accused in the murder of Kiran. There was a financial transaction between the two, which is the reason for the murder,” the Superintendent of Police said.The police have also arrested three more persons in connection with the case. They are Babu Rajendra, Sunil, Bhuvan and Manoj. The investigation into the crime was on and if there were any more involved they would also be arrested, the SP added.
