Families of eye donors were honored at a function held at Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital on Monday,The event, which was part of the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight, was jointly organised by District Blindness Prevention Society and the government hospital.Collector Vishu Mahajan presided over the event and honoured the donor families with shawl, certificate of appreciation and shield.Addressing the gathering, he said people generally hesitated to donate their possessions to others. But the families that donated the eyes of their loved ones had shown thoughtfulness by giving something to others even during their final moments. “The happiness of giving sight to a person through eye donation is similar to the happiness experienced by a mother and her family when a child is born.”The State government was creating awareness about eye donation and organ donation through various initiatives. The district and medical college administrations were also conducting awareness programmes. Hence, people must come forward and pledge their eyes for donation, he added.Earlier, participants took an eye donation pledge administered by the Collector, who also distributed prizes to winners of competitions held as part of the awareness campaign.Dean Ebenezer Joel Kumar, Medical Superintendent R.
