AI is compressing buying journeys and making personalisation more immediate. For enterprises, success depends on redesigning experiences around connected data and timely human intervention.

The customer journey has never followed the neat, linear path depicted in marketing diagrams. But awareness, consideration, purchase and loyalty gave enterprises a reassuring map for organising marketing. AI is now redrawing that map and removing brands from parts of the journey altogether.

A customer can move from curiosity to a carefully researched shortlist without visiting a company’s website or seeing its advertising. Generative AI can compare offers and recommend the best option within a single conversation.

Emerging AI agents could soon complete the journey themselves: making purchases and negotiating directly with enterprise systems. The critical question is no longer simply how brands influence customers, but how they remain visible and valuable when an algorithm stands between them.

At the same time, businesses are using AI to interpret customer behaviour. The opportunity is substantial. Research from Adobe for Business suggests 56% of customers believe AI will improve their experience, while 49% expect it to save them money. Personalisation can increase revenue by between 5% and 15% and improve marketing return on investment by 10% to 30%, says McKinsey & Company.
