PHILADELPHIA — Alex McFarlane has spent about seven weeks in the major leagues, long enough to know what to say in defeat.“Come to the field the next day, flush it,” he said in the Philadelphia Phillies’ clubhouse Sunday, after a 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves that turned on Ronald Acuña Jr.’s three-run homer against him. “Just believe in yourself and understand: don’t let that moment define you.”The Phillies selected McFarlane in the fourth round of the draft in 2022, the first season of a run that will define the core of veterans around him. They’ve made plenty of indelible moments together and still believe in themselves. But only the most skilled plumbers could easily flush days like Sunday.The Eagles — who let the Braves use their locker room for a fantasy football draft before this series — start playing in a week, and this city is still mad for the Phillies. More than 127,000 fans have shown up for baseball on this holiday weekend, with another packed crowd descending Monday on Citizens Bank Park.The trouble is, they also let in the ghosts.The Phillies went 21-7 in August, sweeping the Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels along the way. None of those teams have winning records. The Braves are a closer match to the Phillies, and this matchup has evoked October, a month that’s been too much trick and not enough treat around here.Fans packed Citizens Bank Park on Sunday, but witnessed a three-run home run from Ronald Acuña Jr. and 5-4 Braves win. The fans, as always, made themselves heard, with cheers for the good guys and boos for the villain. The result: heartbreak at home.All of that also happened in the 2022 World Series against the Houston Astros and the 2023 National League Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the last two division series, against the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was mostly more of the same.
