Officials of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) seized ganja and ambergris, a banned substance, from a house in Nerkundram on Saturday. A senior official of the city police said a team of the T. Nagar ANTF unit received a tip-off that Kamalakannan, a petrol bunk employee was hoarding and selling ganja at his residence. Acting on the information, a team led by ANTF Sub-Inspector Madhavan conducted a raid at his house. During the search operation, the police team seized more than 9 kg of ganja. The team also found ambergris, the whale vomit whose sale is banned, kept hidden. They contacted officials of the Forest department. Kamalakannan said ambergris was given by his friend Ashok Kumar to keep it safe. According to the Wildlife Protection Act, possessing or selling ambergris is a punishable offense. The ANTF police arrested Kamalakannan, Ashok Kumar, and Chelladurai. They were later produced before a judicial magistrate and sent to prison.
