The MoU signed by the Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) recently is set to give a major technology push to India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector through large-scale deployment of Smart Domestic Piped Natural Gas Meters, an official release said here on Sunday (September 6, 2026).The initiative is expected to usher in a new generation of gas metering with advanced features including digital monitoring, tamper alerts, leak detection, remote operations and cyber-security safeguards, making the PNG ecosystem not only more efficient and transparent but also safer and more secure for millions of consumers, the release added. The partnership brings together PNGRB’s regulatory expertise and EESL’s experience in demand aggregation and large-scale smart-metering programmes. With PNG connections expanding rapidly across urban and semi-urban areas, traditional manual metre reading and periodic billing systems could face growing challenges relating to accuracy, revenue assurance and safety monitoring and customer service. The initiative is expected to benefit the stakeholders of all States including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
