Canal Edge, a Chicago developer led by White Sox minority partner Justin Ishbia, announced plans Saturday morning for a potential new stadium for the team in the South Loop neighborhood. In March, Ishbia’s private equity firm Shore Capital Partners announced it was working on a deal with Amtrak to buy a 47-acre property near “The 78,” a new development area where the MLS Chicago Fire is building a new stadium. At the time, there was obvious speculation that Ishbia, who has a deal with White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf to potentially take over the team between 2029 and 2034, would look to move the Sox from its home in Bridgeport to this development, located about 2.5 miles north along the Chicago River.Meanwhile, Amtrak wants to open a new maintenance train yard near the current Sox ballpark. Residents in Bridgeport and Chinatown have been speaking up against that plan.Saturday was the first official declaration that Ishbia’s company would look to carve out space for a new stadium in the development it’s now calling “The Railyards,” along with a previously announced healthcare complex. It would be located across the river from the Fire stadium, creating a stadium district common in other markets that hasn’t existed yet in Chicago.
