HYDERABADA citizens’ forum has asked the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Recognising and Licensing Tenant Cultivators to have its meeting at the earliest to examine the present situation of tenant farmers due to uncertainty over the prospects kharif crops, arising out of El Nino conditions, and make a positive interim resolution to take immediate action.The forum comprising Justice (Retd.) B. Sudershan Reddy, Prof. D. Narasimha Reddy, Prof. G. Haragopal, Prof. Shanta Sinha, Justice (Retd.) B. Chandra Kumar, social activist and founder of Gramya Resource Centre for Women Dr. V. Rukmini Rao and Akunuri Murali addressed an open letter to the Cabinet panel.Stating that there is a Statewide campaign for the recognition of cultivators and their inclusion in government schemes, the forum said ‘Telangana Kaulu Raitula Gurtimpu Sadhana Committee’ had conducted a comprehensive study and the report was released on June 9 this year. They said there was a serious urgency for recognition of tenant cultivators.There has already been a delay by the government in reacting to the situation and the commencement of the recognition process at the earliest (this month) would help tenant farmers sell their produce at the minimum support price to the procurement agencies, as most of the tenant farmers have growing paddy, cotton, maize and other crops. They have been through a difficult time due to the El Nino impact, and denial of MSP for their produce could trigger distress among them.The forum has pointed out that Telangana already has an existing legal instrument for recognition of tenant cultivators in the form of the Land Licensed Cultivators Act, 2011. As the law is in force, it is the duty of the government to implement it immediately. The recognised tenant farmers should get the benefit of institutional credit and also various government schemes designated for farmers, they suggested. Published - September 05, 2026 08:48 pm IST
