Sahyadri Krishna Santhe, a two-day event organised by the Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, was inaugurated here on Saturday. The event serves as a one-stop platform to market saplings and seeds of various crops, besides agricultural implements and value-added products.M.V. Dhananjaya, Vice-Chancellor of the university, inaugurated the event. On the first day, hundreds of farmers and residents of Shivamogga visited the stalls set up on the campus of the Agriculture College at Navule in the city.Around 150 stalls have been set up, including about 25 nurseries selling saplings of various crops. A few representatives of Farmers’ Producer Organisations have set up stalls to sell vegetable seeds collected from native growers. Visitors also had access to demonstration plots cultivated by the university on the campus.Veeresh, a grower from Bedara Hosahalli in Shivamogga taluk, has put up a stall to sell saplings of guava, lemon grass and drumstick cultivated on his farm. On just 21 guntas (0.5 acre), he has developed a multi-crop farm that supports his family.“After graduation, I was hoping to join the Indian Army. But I could not succeed, as I fell short of the required weight, and decided to become a farmer instead,” said Veeresh. He grows areca, papaya, lemon grass, guava and other crops on his farm, besides running a nursery to market the saplings. “With hard work and the support of family members, one can earn enough to feed a family,” he said.The event has provided a platform for many such growers, who interacted with visitors and shared their experiences from the field.
