To prevent wallposters being pasted on public spaces and to enhance the visual appeal of the city, the Nagercoil Corporation has initiated a drive to adorn the walls in public spaces, traffic islands and centre medians with colourful murals. The initiative is being carried out with the support of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.Along with adding vibrancy to the city through the murals, the Corporation has also taken up plantation of rosy trumpet saplings along major stretches and in school grounds to increase the city’s green cover.Mural art can currently be seen at places including Vetturnimadam and Vadasery, with the plans to extend the initiative to other parts of the city.According to Nagercoil Corporation Commissioner R. Ishwarya the initiatives launched with the objective of preventing unwanted wallposters across the city and improving the cleanliness and green cover of the city, “Nagercoil city already has good green cover, but to further enhance it, plantation of rosy trumpet trees has been initiated,” she said.She said the trees were being planted at various parts of the city including Ozhuginasery and KP Road. Meanwhile, saplings are being distributed to schools within the Nagercoil Corporation limits based on their requirements.Speaking on the murals, Ms. Ishwarya noted that nature and animal themed artworks had been taken up so far. She added, “There were plans to expand these beautification processes at Christopher Bus Rerminus in Vadasery, Anna Bus Stand in Meenakshipuram and other suitable locations that are vulnerable to pollution.”She added that the Corporation plans to take up different stretches every month for plantation drives and mural art initiatives, as part of its efforts to improve the overall appearance and environmental quality of the city.
