Educational institutions across the city celebrated Teachers’ Day with enthusiasm and gratitude on Saturday (September 5, 2026), commemorating the birth anniversary of former President and eminent educationist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.On the occasion, the Education Department organised a programme to felicitate 80 teachers for their outstanding contributions to the field of education at YVS Murthy Auditorium in Visakhapatnam. The event was attended by Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, Government Whip and Visakhapatnam West MLA P.G.V.R. Naidu (Gana Babu), District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore, North MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju, District Library Chairman Vannemreddy Satish Kumar, District Educational Officer Prema Kumar, Samagra Shiksha APC Chandra Sekhar, teacher union representatives, and others.Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sribharat said that many teachers had played an important role in guiding and shaping his life. Teachers’ Day provides an opportunity to remember and express gratitude to those teachers whose contributions often extend far beyond the classroom, he said. “Teachers who go beyond their prescribed responsibilities, dedicate additional time to students, and make sustained efforts to support their academic and personal development should be identified, encouraged, and recognised,” the MP added.The MP also welcomed the surge in student enrolment in government schools and said that the trend was an encouraging indication of growing public confidence in government schools. He further said that the MP LADS funds available to him are being utilised in a planned and focused manner, with priority being given to the education and healthcare sectors.Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore called for efforts to make Visakhapatnam number one in education and to create ‘Vizag Brand Teachers,’ adding that initiatives like ‘Buddy School’ model and the LEAP programme are actively strengthening student learning outcomes.Meanwhile, Sainik School Korukonda hosted a vibrant celebration at its auditorium under the guidance of Principal Group Captain S.S. Shastri, who served as the chief guest along with Vice Principal Wing Commander Kiran V. and Senior Master N. Ramakrishna. The event featured floral tributes to Dr. Radhakrishnan, the presentation of certificates and cash awards for CBSE academic excellence, and the prestigious Grandhi Kamaraju Memorial Award bestowed upon PGT Mathematics teacher P.
