Not just good for the soul, bread can also be an efficient way to increase your fibre intake amid a rise in awareness about the benefits of consuming 30g a day - in addition to eating enough protein and staying hydrated.

But not all supermarket loaves are baked equally, according to nutritionist Ann Garry.

'As a practical rule of thumb, I would look for around 6g or more of fibre per 100g, ideally with wholegrains near the top of the ingredients list,' the CEO at Health Coaches Academy told the Daily Mail, explaining how she selects the best bread.

'For blood pressure, salt is another figure I would check. Adults are advised to have no more than 6g of salt a day,' she added.
