Updated September 6, 2026 — 7:47am,first published 4:41pmThree young children had to be rushed to hospital after powerful winds lifted a jumping castle into the air in Sydney’s inner south during a day of wild weather that cut power to thousands of homes.More than 10,000 properties across Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Illawarra remained without electricity on Sunday afternoon as crews continued to repair hundreds of faults caused by winds that reached more than 80km/h in Sydney on Saturday.Three children were injured when a jumping castle became airborne in Banksia, in Sydney’s south, amid ferocious wind gusts on Saturday.Nine NewsThe NSW State Emergency Service responded to nearly 600 calls for assistance after the wild weather swept across the state, while a total fire ban remained in place for Greater Sydney.Endeavour Energy said there were 356 individual faults and network issues still requiring repair works at 5pm on Sunday. It said power was expected to be restored to about 90 per cent of customers by 10pm.A spokesperson said it was anticipated that about 3000 households would remain without power overnight, primarily in Penrith, Parramatta, Macarthur, Liverpool, The Hills, Hawkesbury, Blacktown, Wollongong and Shoalhaven. Additional crews will be deployed on Monday.An Ausgrid spokeswoman said crews were still working to restore power to about 1500 homes. It was expected that some services would not be restored until 11pm.The wild weather produced extraordinary scenes, including a mattress bouncing through traffic in Liverpool and a couch blown from a high-rise building in St Leonards.Emergency services were called to Gardiner Park in Banksia, about 12 kilometres south of the CBD, about 1.20pm on Saturday after the jumping castle became airborne. The children were taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene.A preschool-aged boy and a girl suffered head injuries. A baby was treated for minor injuries. A woman was also taken to hospital with minor injuries, the spokeswoman said. All three children were in a stable condition.This was the second incident involving an airborne jumping castle recorded in a matter of hours on Saturday. Two children were injured at a party near Geelong in Victoria in the morning. Both children were taken to hospital with injuries to their upper bodies and were in a stable condition.At the height of the storm, about 40,000 Ausgrid customers were without electricity after strong winds damaged a substation in Sydney’s west. A further 50,000 customers on the Endeavour Energy network were also affected.Bankstown, Milperra and Revesby were among the hardest-hit areas.
