President Donald Trump’s diplomatic envoys deserve praise for working to secure a peace deal that ends the war in Ukraine. But by again meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will only lend credibility to Putin’s false sincerity.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted on Thursday that the two men were likely to visit both Kyiv and Moscow in the coming days. Welcoming the prospective visit, Zelensky added that Ukraine was committed to finding a just resolution to the now 4-year, 6-month-old war. Putin has offered similar claims since Trump’s return to office, keen to avoid alienating the American president. He knows that Trump prizes both the personal prestige and moral value of peace agreements. The Russian leader also knows that isolating Trump would risk catastrophic sanctions or boosted U.S. arms support for Ukraine. And that these developments would threaten Putin’s hold on power.
