The Western Cape Government has officially opened a new R87.41 million Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) at Khayelitsha District Hospital, marking the second of three specialised mental health facilities scheduled to launch in the province this year.
Thursday’s launch follows the July unveiling of the first unit at Eerste River Hospital.
Designed to enhance patient dignity, safety, and recovery, the 30-bed unit features natural lighting, ventilated wards, two secure outdoor courtyards, and dedicated patient care areas isolated from operational spaces.
Mireille Wenger, Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness highlighted the facility as a symbol of hope, noting that the tailored space offers reassuring, appropriate care for patients during critical times while providing a safer environment for healthcare staff.
