The Big Lebowski star's weight struggles are well documented, with the Hollywood actor once admitting he'd lose weight only to put it all back on again. But rather than relying on a short-term diet, he eventually decided to make a series of alterations designed to become part of his everyday life. One of his hardest decisions was to cut out alcohol after years of struggling with drinking. Goodman stopped the bottle in 2007 and has remained sober since. He also drastically changed what was on his plate. The now 74-year-old adopted a Mediterranean-style diet based around foods such as vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, fish, nuts and olive oil. This approach generally limits heavily processed foods, therefore placing a greater emphasis on fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients.Speaking to People in 2010, Goodman said: "I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste. It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next. I wanted to live life better."According to Mediterranean Living, Goodman began following the Mediterranean diet in 2011, and by 2018 had lost around 7st 2lb. This loss would go further still considerably in the years following, with his total weight loss reported to currently sit at more than 14st, or over 200lbs (around 91kg).Goodman has also credited controlling his portions with helping him change his eating habits. He worked with health coach Mackie Shilstone and incorporated regular exercise into his routine, including walking and other forms of physical activity. The actor has previously spoken about wanting to improve his health rather than simply change his appearance. His transformation has therefore been described as a long-term lifestyle change involving his diet, exercise, portion sizes and decision to give up alcohol.Article continues belowThe Mediterranean diet is not a guarantee that someone will lose a particular amount of weight, and individual results can vary considerably. However, according to the NHS, the eating pattern has been associated with a range of health benefits and is generally considered a healthy approach to eating.Goodman’s transformation took place over several years rather than happening overnight. His story shows how multiple changes to everyday habits can add up to a substantial difference over time.Anyone considering a significant change to their diet or exercise routine should take their own circumstances into account.
