Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia and Ukraine, as the direct parties to the war, should take the lead in negotiating an agreement to end the conflict, while other countries can provide support and assistance.
Speaking at a plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, Putin said Moscow and Kyiv should first reach an agreement among themselves on ending the war. He said other states, including the United States and China, could contribute to the process and help promote a peaceful settlement.
“First and foremost, Russia and Ukraine must reach an agreement between themselves [on ending the war]. Other countries are ready to support and help. And not only the United States. China, for example, constantly draws attention to this and is helping to ensure that the problem is resolved, primarily through peaceful means,” Putin said.
He argued that the countries directly involved in the conflict should ultimately resolve the issue, while expressing appreciation to governments attempting to facilitate negotiations. Putin also said he believed there was still a possibility of reaching an agreement.
“But still, first and foremost, this problem must be resolved by the countries involved in the conflict: Russia and Ukraine. This is the right approach. But we are grateful to everyone who is trying to contribute to resolving this issue. Is there a chance? Yes, in my view, there is,” he said.
