Google confirmed that its August 2026 spam update rolled out worldwide between August 18 and August 21, affecting rankings in Google Search. Third-party tracking indicates the update coincided with unusually severe search-result movement: a materially larger share of URLs that had ranked in the top 10 dropped beyond position 100 than in a July comparison period without a confirmed update.
The official Google Search Status Dashboard entry for the August 2026 spam update lists the incident as lasting two days and 16 hours. Google did not provide a page-level explanation of which signals changed or identify the types of sites affected. That means website owners should avoid drawing conclusions from volatility alone, but should treat a sustained loss of impressions, clicks, or rankings as a prompt to inspect their site against Google’s spam policies and quality guidance.
What the ranking data shows
The strongest indication of disruption comes from SE Ranking data summarized by Search Engine Land. Across 100,000 US keywords and 20 industries, the analysis compared August 17 to 22 with a July baseline period. It found that 16.71% of URLs previously ranking in Google’s top 10 fell beyond position 100 during the August window. The comparable July figure was 9.2%.
