The Karnataka Lokayukta police on Thursday caught a police constable red-handed while allegedly accepting a ₹20,000 bribe, but his colleague, who was also allegedly involved in the demand, managed to escape from the spot before the Lokayukta officers could identify him.The accused have been identified as Parashuram and Veeresh, both attached to the Brahmapur Police Station in Kalaburagi city. According to the Lokayukta police, the two constables had allegedly demanded money from Kanna Raju Patil of Bapu Nagar, threatening to extern his son, Karthik, if he failed to pay the bribe.The complainant alleged that the two policemen had been visiting his house and intimidating the family by accusing his son of involvement in theft and robbery. They had allegedly threatened to keep him at the police station at night and extern him from the area. The policemen had initially demanded ₹1 lakh and had received ₹50,000 as an advance, following which they allegedly demanded another ₹20,000, the police said.Acting on the complaint, the police laid a trap and caught Parashuram red-handed while he was allegedly accepting ₹20,000 from the complainant. However, Veeresh reportedly realised that a trap had been laid and escaped from the spot before the Lokayukta officers could identify him.“There were five to six policemen in uniform. Our officers caught Parashuram while he was accepting the bribe. Before they could identify Veeresh, he escaped from the spot. We will nab him shortly,” Karnataka Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Siddaraju C. told The Hindu.The Lokayukta police have launched efforts to trace Veeresh.
