A special drive called ‘Whiteline-Lifeline’ conducted by the Traffic and Road Safety Management Unit of the Keralam Police across the State, as part of increasing the safety of pedestrians at zebra crossings and ensuring discipline among drivers, detected 1,038 violations at zebra crossings. As many as 55,207 vehicles were subjected to inspection as part of the drive.Out of these, 1,038 vehicles were found to have committed violations at zebra crossings and a fine of ₹2,50,631 was imposed. The special drive was conducted from August 20 to 25. During this period, the special drive focussed on increasing the safety of pedestrians and compliance with traffic rules across the State.Enforcement teams were deployed at major junctions, hazardous locations, and busy pedestrian corridors to ensure strict compliance with the rules. Strict action was taken against vehicle owners for not slowing down while pedestrians were crossing the road, speeding and ignoring the right of way legally given to pedestrians, said a statement from the Police department.Necessary instructions were given to sensitise road users on the importance of zebra crossings, safe driving, etc. Similar special drives will be continued, and strict action will be taken against repeated violations. The special drive was conducted with the active participation of District Police Chiefs, Traffic Zonal Police Superintendents and Traffic Enforcement Units as per the instructions of the Inspector General of Traffic and Road Safety Management, said the statement.If traffic violations are noticed, the public can inform the traffic and road safety initiative of the Traffic and Road Safety Management Unit, Shubha Yatra WhatsApp number (974700 1099), along with photos, audio, and videos of the violations, along with the district, place, date, time, and vehicle number where the violation occurred, said the police.
