LAGOS — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to democratic principles, saying the outcome of the recent Osun governorship election demonstrated that Nigeria’s ruling party could lose an election without undermining the democratic process.
Sanwo-Olu spoke on Thursday at the seventh annual lecture of Freedom Online, held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, where he addressed the state of Nigeria’s democracy, electoral reforms and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
He cited the August 15 Osun governorship election, in which incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, by more than 60,000 votes, as evidence of what he described as the Federal Government’s respect for democratic processes.
Tinubu had congratulated Adeleke after the election, describing his re-election as a “fitting assurance” that democracy would continue to flourish under his administration.
