Greece’s embassy in Ankara has delivered a formal complaint to the Turkish Foreign Ministry over Turkey’s public statements on new Greek regulatory frameworks that include the Aegean Sea, and over the Turkish presidential decisions of August 15 declaring two marine parks.
Diplomatic sources said that when the Greek demarche was handed over, the Turkish ministry in turn delivered statements “which repeated the baseless Turkish claims that had already been expressed publicly.”
“Greece categorically rejects the Turkish claims as arbitrary and lacking in any legal basis,” the sources said. “Issues of sovereignty in the Aegean have been clearly and definitively determined by the relevant international treaties.”
Greece also rejected as invalid and devoid of legitimacy the declaration of national marine parks by Turkey, to the extent that they lie without Turkish jurisdiction and within the Greek continental shelf.
“Greece will continue to draw to the attention of its European and international partners any unilateral act that breaches international law and infringes on its sovereignty and sovereign rights,” the sources said.
