The Defense Ministry will coordinate public agencies fighting a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak on Lesvos, under an amendment filed Tuesday night.
A military officer will lead the effort, and the North Aegean Region will also get a €3 million emergency grant.
Nearly seven months after the first case ended 20 disease-free years, more than 81,000 animals, mostly sheep and goats, have been killed. The veterinary workers’ union criticized the plan.
The Regional Council voted August 28 to pause tracing, sampling and culling after farmer protests, but veterinary authorities overruled it August 31. Noncompliant officials will face fines October 1.
