Officials in Athens signed a €209 million contract Wednesday to build the Aenaon Metropolitan Park at Faliro Bay, a long-delayed project aimed at reconnecting the city with its coastline.
The 74.1-hectare park, whose second phase secures European funding, will be 75% Mediterranean greenery, with 4,000 trees and 185,000 shrubs, alongside sports, cultural and recreational facilities.
The project, whose first phase of road and flood-control work concluded in 2022, had languished for over six decades, said Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias. The Attica Region awarded the contract to a consortium of Terna, METKA, Iliohora and ELEMKA. Total public investment exceeds €460 million, 85% financed by the EU Cohesion Fund, officials said.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the ceremony at Plateia Nerou, saying, “The obstacles have been overcome. European funds worth €370 million have been secured, and we are starting.”
Construction is set to begin in early 2027, with completion targeted within 30 months.
