Shopify says AI-referred sessions to its storefronts grew 197% year over year in Q2 2026, a much faster rate than organic search, which grew 12% on a substantially larger base. The key takeaway for merchants is not that conventional search has been displaced. Organic remains the volume leader. Instead, Shopify’s data points to an emerging discovery channel that can bring shoppers to product pages with strong purchase intent, particularly when a store’s catalog data is structured for AI systems to use.

According to Shopify’s analysis of AI search behavior by category, orders associated with AI referrals grew about threefold during the quarter. AI traffic is still a smaller share of overall traffic, but its growth and conversion patterns make it increasingly relevant to stores that depend on product discovery.

What Shopify’s data shows

Shopify’s findings support a dual-optimization approach. Merchants should continue investing in organic search because it brings far more traffic at present. At the same time, they can improve how AI tools understand and recommend their products by maintaining accurate, enriched catalog information and high-quality product detail pages.
