Germany is investigating what police describe as a possible second deliberate attempt to disrupt the country's power infrastructure, while an explosion near Augsburg's main train station injured two people and temporarily halted rail traffic.
Police in Bergheim, a town west of Cologne, said they were investigating what appeared to be deliberate vandalism against technical infrastructure at a power station. Several power lines failed there on Tuesday evening following what was initially described as a short circuit.
“Based on the current status of the investigation, we do not believe this was caused by a technical malfunction, but rather by a deliberate act, a criminal offense,” a police spokesperson said.
Authorities did not initially provide details about the nature or extent of the damage. They said the incident did not cause a power outage in the surrounding area.
The Bergheim incident came just a day after another suspected act of sabotage near the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant in the eastern state of Brandenburg. Police said explosive devices had been used in an apparent attempt to damage power infrastructure and potentially trigger a wider disruption.
