Disney cashed out, selling them to Arte Moreno for around $183 million. Twenty-three years later, after a dysfunctional era that ranged from hilarious to tragic, Moreno will sell the team to Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke for an MLB-record valuation of $4 billion.(Hey, no reason, but one immediate effect of a salary cap would be rapidly increasing MLB franchise values.)When it comes to changing course, MLB franchises are more barge than bicycle, so the descent into madness didn’t happen immediately after Moreno bought the team. In fact, from 2003 to 2009, the Angels won five division championships, advancing to the ALCS twice!But let’s be honest: When Moreno changed the team name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005, that was a pretty good indication of how the next couple of decades would unfold.The list of facepalm moments is too long to write out here*.
