I’m Levi Weaver — welcome to The Windup!Firings: Minasian out in AnaheimLast week, Ken Rosenthal gave us a list of front-office members on the hot seat.Now, we’re one down: The Angels fired GM Perry Minasian on Friday, replacing him in the interim with longtime Cardinals exec John Mozeliak.It was beyond time. Since Minasian took the helm in Anaheim in November 2020, the Angels were 392-500. But as Sam Blum notes, the record was far from the only failure in Anaheim over the last few years:The mayhem ranged from firing a mohawked Joe Maddon in the middle of a 14-game losing streak, to Anthony Rendon fighting a fan, to putting six players on waivers a month after a failed all-in trade deadline in Shohei Ohtani’s final contract year. There were brawls, copious failed free-agent signings, spats over lack of air conditioning and minor leaguers complaining about poor living conditions.Minasian was far from the only problem — point your fingers higher, to the top of the chain of command — but Mozeliak is also a respected front-office exec who saw the Cardinals make the postseason 10 times during his tenure in St. Louis (2007-2025).I’m not going to tell anyone how to feel, but I can tell you how I’d feel if I checked any of these boxes:Angels fan: OK great, who’s next to go? Mozeliak didn’t give any specifics at his introduction, but he was at least refreshingly candid about the team’s failures — especially by comparison to his predecessor.Owner Arte Moreno: An unwavering sense of confidence that I’ve made nothing but great moves over the years, so this must be another one!Manager Kurt Suzuki: *Writing down “update resume” on my to-do list.*Player Mike Trout: (Well, I know Trout doesn’t feel how I would — I’d have been a Phillie years ago.)Someone who follows baseball for the drama: Disappointed, because Blum writing about Minasian was an all-timer for scratching that itch. But Moreno still owns the team, and hey: The Mets are still the Mets! (And the Giants have been very Metsy this year, too.)Middle Relief: Who could replace Mendoza?Today, Ken and Will take a look at who might replace Carlos Mendoza after the Mets’ manager was fired on Friday. Here’s an excerpt. David Ross? Carlos Beltrán? Albert Pujols?The Mets are in the market for their fifth full-time manager since Terry Collins’ retirement following the 2017 season. The list does not include interim manager Andy Green, who president of baseball operations David Stearns said would return to the front office at the end of the season.
