In a major step forward, the Corporation of Madurai has announced a three-day camp to collect e-waste from residents of Madurai city.Beginning from September 4 (Friday), the public can drop their e-waste, including old mobile phones, unused chargers, cables, laptops, desktops and other unused electronic gadgets, at over 40 locations across the city.For the benefit of residents, the Corporation has planned to install large black bins at all the tax collection centres, the five zone offices, Anna Maaligai premises and other key ward offices.Apart from Health Department officials, the Corporation has also roped in volunteers and activists involved in environmental protection.Members of Young Indians (Yi), who were organising “Maa Madurai Vizha” at Tamukkam Grounds, have come forward to install the bins and collect e-waste during the three-day camp, Corporation officials said.Commissioner Gaurav Kumar told The Hindu that the initial response had been encouraging. People were ready to support conservancy workers by segregating waste at source, he said. The Corporation was providing bins in different colours — red, green, blue and black — to residents.The Corporation had launched four-way segregation of waste from September 1 (Tuesday) in Jaihindpuram, a densely populated area.Welcoming the three-day mega camp, many educational institutions said they would send text messages and WhatsApp messages to students to make use of the facility. E-waste should be safely disposed of and should not be thrown along with other waste, as it could harm the environment, a faculty member of an engineering college said.Based on the success of the mega camp, the Corporation authorities said they would attempt to install bins at schools and colleges, where students could dispose of their unused or old electronic gadgets.
