Coinbase is expanding its derivatives business into Canada, allowing eligible Canadian customers to trade regulated crypto futures through Coinbase Financial Markets.

The company said Wednesday the launch marks the first time Canadian traders can access Coinbase’s native crypto derivatives and makes it the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct native crypto futures in the country.

The product lineup includes 23 perpetual and dated contracts tied to assets including Bitcoin, Ether and Solana. Coinbase is also offering five commodity futures for gold, silver and oil, alongside index futures such as COIN50.

The move addresses a gap in Canada’s crypto market, where traders seeking derivatives have often turned to offshore or unregulated platforms. Coinbase said its regulated offering gives sophisticated investors a domestic venue for expressing market views, hedging portfolios and managing risk.

Derivatives are already widely used across traditional finance. The Bank of Canada estimates that one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations actively use derivatives to hedge earnings. Crypto derivatives are similarly significant, with global trading volume roughly 4.4 times that of crypto spot markets.
