Child abuse remains a serious concern, highlighting the need for greater awareness, protection and support for vulnerable children.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the toxic stress caused by child abuse can disrupt healthy development and increase the risk of lasting mental, physical and behavioural problems. While some children show resilience, research shows abuse significantly raises the likelihood of harmful outcomes for individuals, families and societies.
Despite major interventions and strategies, the alarming statistics and intensity of child abuse have raised multiple concerns about how we are working towards a safer South Africa for our children.
As members of our communities and organisations, it has become increasingly obvious that we need better collaboration and unified approaches to build multidisciplinary approaches addressing child abuse.
Most significantly, the sense of urgency with which we respond to abuse complaints needs to be prioritised, and the safety of minors and harsher, expedited legal implications need to be addressed.
