The investigation into the killing of a young woman in Sofia's Buxton district is continuing after a Ukrainian citizen was detained and charged with premeditated murder.
The victim has been identified by Bulgarian media as an 18-year-old Japanese citizen who was in a relationship with the detained man. The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office said the suspect, identified by the initials Y.G., has been placed in custody for up to 72 hours and is accused of killing his girlfriend with multiple stab wounds to the neck and back.
The crime came to light at around 7 a.m. on Monday after residents of the apartment building alerted police about the man's behavior. According to witness accounts, the 24- or 25-year-old Ukrainian man was outside the building, screaming and appearing to be in an altered or inadequate state.
He reportedly had difficulty getting into the building and eventually broke the glass of the entrance door before going up to the apartment. Before that, he allegedly damaged two cars parked on the street. A paving stone was reportedly found inside one of the vehicles.
Police officers responding to the report found the man near the damaged cars and detained him. They then searched an apartment whose door was open and discovered the woman's body inside.
